(CNN) — U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned Iran on Sunday to not view the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Iraq as an opportunity to try to build its influence in the country.

“No one, most particularly Iran, should miscalculate about our continuing commitment to and with the Iraqis going forward,” she told CNN’s “State of the Union” when asked whether Iran’s relationship with Iraq is a concern.

In an interview last week with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said his country will not increase its involvement with Iraq because of the U.S. withdrawal. “I don’t think there is going to be any change,” Ahmadinejad said.

Washington (CNN) — Citing “mounting evidence” of repression of the Iranian opposition, the Obama administration added more sanctions against Iranian government officials, members of the Revolutionary Guards Corps and others accused by the United States of being responsible for human rights abuses.

The sanctions, announced Wednesday by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, block the assets of, and prohibit U.S. citizens from engaging in any business with, those on the list, which includes the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, the country’s prosecutor general, and the ministers of welfare and intelligence.

Washington (CNN) — The United States warned Iran on Friday it is prepared to push for significantly stronger economic sanctions against it in the wake of the U.N nuclear watchdog’s resolution censuring Tehran’s nuclear program.

Senior administration officials spoke with reporters on the condition their names not be used said.

“We are committed to putting together a package of consequences if we don’t find a willing partner. We hope Iran takes note of that clear message,” one senior official said.

WASHINGTON – Congress is poised to act swiftly on new penalties against Iran if international talks on Tehran’s nuclear program show signs of faltering. And this time lawmakers are talking about trying to block gas and refined petroleum exports to Iran, possibly causing serious disruptions in the lives of ordinary Iranians.

“If we want to get their attention, we have to do something real: sanction Iran’s gasoline imports,” said Rep. Ted Poe, a Texas Republican, in a speech on the House floor. “That’s where Ahmadinejad is vulnerable,” he said, referring to Iran’s president.

The terms of the negotiations will make or break the talks, Clinton said in an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper. Now that Iran knows its nuclear facilities have been discovered, discussions might be worthwhile, Clinton said.

Clinton compared it to past negotiations with Iraq.

“It’s just like Saddam Hussein when he was there,” Clinton said. “If you can verify, you can make a deal with anybody.”

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, however, has left no room for trust, Clinton said.

“You can’t believe what Ahmadinejad said,” he said.

Clinton discussed a variety of issues with Cooper on Friday, among them the showdown with Iran, the war in Afghanistan and his change of heart on same-sex marriage.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – A new national poll suggests that that nearly three out of four Americans don’t want the U.S. directly intervene in the election crisis in Iran even though most Americans are upset by how the Iranian government has dealt with protests over controversial election results.

More than eight in ten questioned in the CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll, released Monday, think the election results released by the Iranian government were a fraud, with just one in ten believing the results were accurate. But only three in ten respondents say they are personally outraged by the results, with another 55 percent upset by not outraged.
