Washington (CNN) — The Obama administration will push for letting tax cuts for wealthy Americans expire while extending them for the rest of the nation, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said.

In interviews broadcast Sunday on ABC and NBC, Geithner called for a balanced approach as the economy recovers from the recession that started in 2008 while facing mounting federal debt.

Washington (CNN) — President Obama is applying the brakes, at least temporarily, to expansion of offshore oil drilling.

Obama is delaying oil exploration off the coast of Alaska, canceling the sale of a lease to drill off Virginia and extending the moratorium on permits to drill any new deepwater wells for six months, a White House official said Thursday.

Obama’s announcements Thursday come in response to a deadly explosion on a Gulf of Mexico oil rig — an accident that has triggered a devastating oil spill.

“It is sort of a Super Bowl of lobbying for health care reform. The lobbyists are winning so far. But the game’s not over yet,” said Rep. Jim Cooper, D-Tennessee.

As lawmakers work to come up with a plan that can make it to President Obama’s desk, industries and interests close to the issue are digging deeper into their pockets to sway public opinion and those in office.

The insurance industry launched its first air attack with an ad aimed at seniors.

“Most people agree we need to reform health care, but is it right to ask 10 million seniors on Medicare Advantage for more than their fair share? Congress is proposing more than $100 billion in cuts to Medicare Advantage,” the ad says, referring to the private insurance plan Medicare offers to some recipients.

WASHINGTON – Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is canceling plans to attend international meetings in Italy and Greece this week as she recovers from surgery to repair a broken elbow.

Clinton suffered the injury in a fall at the State Department last Wednesday. She had surgery on Friday.

Deputy Secretary of States James Steinberg told reporters that Clinton is recovering but is not up to making the trip for a series of meetings on major issues like Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Israel-Palestinian peace process.
