But Londoff isn’t complaining.

The bigger picture, he said Tuesday, is that Johnny Londoff Chevrolet and other dealerships across the country sold almost 700,000 cars and trucks in a bad economy, thanks to the economic stimulus initiative.

“People sold through 90 or 120 days of inventory in 40 days,” Londoff said. “It gave us a June and July that none of us expected.”

He acknowledged that the government reimbursements are slow but added, “If you do this story in 30 days, the dealers will say, ‘Hey, I got my money.’ “

That’s what the government is promising, though the National Automobile Dealers Association remains skeptical.

WASHINGTON – Three Indiana state pension and construction funds want the Supreme Court to block Chrysler’s sale to Fiat so they can pursue an appeal in hopes of getting a better deal.

The funds filed emergency papers at the high court early Sunday.

An appeals court in New York approved the sale Friday, but gave objectors until Monday afternoon to try to get the Supreme Court to intervene. Chrysler LLC wants to sell the bulk of its assets to a group led by Italy’s Fiat Group SpA as part of its plan to emerge from bankruptcy protection.

The emergency request went first to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who handles such matters from New York. She can act on her own or refer it to the entire court.

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama wants drivers to go farther on a gallon of gas and cause less damage to the environment — and be willing to pick up the tab.

Obama on Tuesday planned to announce the first-ever national emissions limits for cars and trucks, as well as require a 35.5 miles per gallon standard. Consumers should expect to pay an extra $1,300 per vehicle by the time the plan is complete in 2016, officials said.

The administration officials spoke on the condition of anonymity ahead of the formal announcement by Obama.

The fallout from global warming, while subtle now, could eventually be even more dire. That prospect has Democrats pushing legislation that rivals in scope the nation’s landmark anti-pollution laws.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — As auto giants General Motors and Chrysler face Tuesday’s deadline to submit plans to show the government how they can repay billions in federal loans, the White House is creating a Presidential Task Force on Autos to oversee the restructuring of the auto industry, a senior administration official said.

The task force will include members from the Departments of Treasury, Labor, Transportation, Commerce, and Energy, the National Economic Council (NEC), the White House Office of Energy and Environment, the Council of Economic Advisers and the Environmental Protection Agency, the official said.

It will be overseen by Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and NEC Director Larry Summers.

Geithner will oversee the loan agreements with the automakers.
